Foley First to Hit the Gridiron in 2014

Foley, AL: The Foley Lions are not waiting until the last minute to prep for their jump into the newly created 7A Super Division.

Far from it.

We just reached the Ides of March and the Lion equipment crew is already packing the pads back up following earlier than normal spring drills.

Practice may have wrapped early but if head coach Todd Watson had his way the Lions would get this kind of jump every year.

Watson sited the small number of lion players participating in other spring sports, quality gulf coast weather and additional recovery time for springtime injuries as reasons for getting out of the gate first.

Watson told the Press-Register, “If you go through spring early, you get a feel for the young guys and what they can do, and it gives you more time to sit down and study what you want to be on offense and defense,” he said. “At this level, you really run what the kids you have can do. So we can tweak some things as we need to during the summer.”

Foley closed out their 2013 campaign at 6-6, falling in the second round of the AHSAA 6A playoffs to eventual state runner up Auburn.
The Lions will open their season, in newly formed class 7A region 1, on August 22 against cross county rival Gulf Shores at Ivan Jones Stadium.
